Fun Friday - The Fun in Challenge(s) and Memes.

This is what we see as we walk into our local library:
It says: "I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library."   Jorge Luis Borges
I truly believe so and conversely, any place filled with books is paradise for me. I live books, I celebrate books, I obviously love books. I remember my mom asking me what I would like for my birthday or other special events each year and I would always have one response,"Books".
Reading is fun and exciting and enriching and ...I can go on and on about books and reading but that is not what this post is about. 2011 saw me blogging and reading more books - one of the main reasons I did a whole lot of reading I never did before was the reading challenges that I took part in. I admit I did not complete the goals I made for them yet (save one) but I am going into 2012 better informed, and with a plan in mind...
So, 2012 Reading Challenges, here I come.
I will have a post on Saturday with the details of the challenges I plan to participate in. Maybe I am overdoing it but only time will tell - and anyways, I am doing it for the fun of it :-)

"Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?"
~ Henry Ward Beecher ~

"The more that you read,
the more things you will know.
The more that you learn,
the more places you'll go."
~ Dr. Seuss ~

"MY BOOK!
I did it!
I did it!
Come and look
At what I’ve done!
I read a book!
When someone wrote it
Long ago
For me to read,
How did he know
That this was the book
I’d take from the shelf
And lie on the floor
And read by myself?
I really read it!
Just like that!
Word by word,
From first to last!
I’m sleeping with
This book in bed,
This first FIRST book
I’ve ever read!"
~ David L. Harrison ~

Friday Memes:
Book Beginnings: This is a weekly meme hosted by 'A Few More Pages'.
How to participate: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments. Include the title and the author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you would like, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line, and let us know if you liked or did not like the sentence. The link-up will be at A Few More Pages every Friday and will be open for the entire week.

"THE LITTLE CARRS I was sitting in the meadows one day, not long ago, at a place where there was a small brook. It was a hot day. The sky was very blue, and white clouds, like great swans, went floating over it to and fro."

Coolidge, Susan (2005-09-01). What Katy Did (p. 11). Public Domain Books. Kindle Edition.
The Friday 56 is a bookish meme sponsored by Freda's Voice. It is really easy to participate. Just grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56. Find a sentence that grabs you and post it.

"But Clover kept her face perfectly, and sat down as demure as ever, except that the little dimples came and went at the corners of her mouth; dimples, partly natural, and partly, I regret to say, the result of a pointed slate-pencil, with which Clover was in the habit of deepening them every day while she studied her lessons."

Coolidge, Susan (2005-09-01). What Katy Did (p. 56). Public Domain Books. Kindle Edition.

Both excerpts are from 'What Katy Did' by Susan Coolidge, a childhood favorite of mine and I am rereading this now along with 'American Rust' to provide a change of mood when I need it.

  1. I love books that are descriptive, because you can just close your eyes and imagine you're there!! Love the quote, that's gotta be true! Hop on over if you have the time:

  2. Both snippets are wonderfully descriptive...the p. 56 made me laugh, as I visualized this girl "drawing in" her dimples.
